The South
Derbyshire
Dales |
The Southern area of the Peak District's
1013 square miles is praised for its
scenic gorge like dales, the most popular being Dovedale. Matlock is centre
of the eastern part of the county which includes the coal fields of central
England.
The Dales lie within the
Peak District National Park and
are surrounded by the high windswept moors, which are capable of dramatic
weather changes.
An area ideal for cycling and easy
walking, the Dales offer many remnants of the Industrial Revolution,
including Textile Mills, Canals and redundant Mines.
The pointed crest of Thorpe Cloud over
looks the entrance to Dove Dale, being one of Britain's finest Gorges which with
Manifold Valley are a delight to Walk or Cycle through.
Derbyshire is rich in abbeys, castles and old houses, and
prehistoric stone circles and later Roman remains for those interested in the
past to investigate on their travels.
